Victory Medal 1914-19 (11174 Pte. C. Royle. Lan. Fus.) good very fine £70-90

Charles Royle, a native of Salford, enlisted into the 15th (Service) Battalion (1st Salford), Lancashire Fusiliers on their formation in 1914 and served during the Great War with ‘IV’ Platoon,’A’ Company. On 1 July 1916 the 1st Salford Pals were on the left side of the 32nd Division’s advance on Thiepval Ridge. The battalion was decimated during the advance, being swept with machine gun fire and losing 470 men out of an attacking force of 624. Charles Royle was among those killed. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, France.
