Arthur Burton, a native of Warrington, served on the Western Front with the 13th (Service) Battalion Royal Scots (Lothian Regiment), landing in France on 9 July 1915. He was killed in action on the 21 August 1916 while his battalion were in the reserve positions by the Fricourt Road, Somme. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, France.

William Hynes, a resident of Golborne, Lancashire, served with the 5th (Service) Battalion Connaught Rangers in Gallipoli, landing on 13 September 1915. He later transferred to the 6th (Service) Battalion, serving on the Western Front, where he died of pneumonia on 30 March 1918. He is buried in Abbeville Communal Cemetery Extension, France.

George F Simpson, a native of Edinburgh, enlisted into the 1/5th (Service) Battalion (Queen’s Edinburgh Rifles) Royal Scots (Lothian Regiment) landing at “W” Beach, Gallipoli on 25 April 1915. He died of wounds on 29 April 1915 after his battalion had been involved in heavy fighting, trying to maintain a solid foothold on the peninsular. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Helles Memorial, Turkey.

Joseph Barlow a resident of Oldham, originally enlisted into the Manchester Regiment. He served on the Western Front with the 8th (Service) Battalion Royal Dublin Fusiliers before being posted to the 10th (Service) Battalion. He was later transferred to the Royal Munster Fusiliers, serving with the 2nd and then 1st Battalions, and was awarded the Military Medal (London Gazette 13 September 1918)- awards listed in this gazette cover the period from late April to early May 1918. Barlow was killed in action on 28 August 1918, when his battalion made an attack on German line at Héninel, the leading companies being subjected to considerable machine gun fire. He is buried in St. Martin-sur-Cojeul British Cemetery, France.

Edwin E Whitfield served on the Western Front with the 13th Battalion, The Royal Scots Fusiliers.

Patrick Reynolds, a resident of Rawtenstall, Lancashire, enlisted on 10 August 1916. He served in Salonika with the 2nd Battalion Princess Victoria’s (Royal Irish Fusiliers), landing on 1 January 1917. Following a spell in hospital being treated for malaria, he was posted to the 5th (Service) Battalion on 11 June 1917. The following month he was transported to Malta on the hospital ship Ghurkha and in December was invalided back to the U.K. He was discharged from the army on 2 March 1918, due to sickness.

Frederick Ness served on the Western Front with the 10th (Service) Battalion Royal Dublin Fusiliers. On 21 November 1917 he was admitted to 18th General Hospital, while serving with the 8th/9th Battalion, attached to the 1st Battalion Hampshire Regiment.

The Silver War Badge ‘B172019’ was issued to 71087 Corporal
James Charles Lambourne, Royal Fusiliers, who enlisted on 12 December 1915 and served on the Western Front with the 2/2nd and 2/4th (City of London) Battalions. He was discharged from the army on 3 February 1919, no longer physically fit for active service due to wounds.
