Andrew Johnston served during the Great War with the 1/8th (The Argyllshire) Battalion, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders in the French theatre from 1 May 1915. He advanced to Colour Sergeant, and subsequently served with the 2nd Battalion on the North West Frontier in 1935. Johnston continued to serve during the Second War, and was attached to 2 Special Service Battalion, 18 November 1940 - 18 February 1941.
