John Edward Benbow was first commissioned into the 1st Dragoon Guards and rose in rank to become Major before being appointed a Paymaster in the Army Pay Department, with rank of Captain, on 8 May 1894. He was promoted to Staff Paymaster with rank of Hon. Major on 7 February 1902.
