Crimea 1854-56, 3 clasps, Alma, Inkermann, Sebastopol (John English, 1st Bn. 4th Regt.) officially impressed naming, top lugs neatly removed, very fine £300-400

John English was born in Westport, County Mayo, in 1833. He attested for 82nd Foot at Salford in September 1852, before transferring to the 4th Foot in April 1854. English served with the 1st Battalion during the Crimean campaign, and was discharged to pension, 13 June 1856, ‘in consequence of an injury of the left leg from a gunshot in the trenches before Sebastopol.’ (Service papers refer)

English returned to Ireland, before emigrating to America in 1885. His pension being paid to the Consul in Philadelphia.

Two men of this name appear on the medal roll for the regiment, one with the medal entitlement as listed above, the other listed as being entitled to ‘Sebastopol’ and ‘Alma’ clasps only.
