James Roger Western was born in London on 28 February 1812. He was a Cadet of the 1829 season and arrived in India on 6 October 1830; Lieutenant, May 1839; Captain, August 1849. Conducting Engineer at Mooltan and Goojerat (despatches London Gazette 7 March 1849 and 19 April 1849; Medal with 2 clasps). Afterwards Executive Engineer 11th (Meerut) Division, November 1853 until his retirement in January 1855. Lieutenant-Colonel, May 1855; Hon. Colonel, 1856. He died in London on 13 January 1871.
