A Great War 1917 ‘Zonnebeke operations’ M.M. pair awarded to Lance-Corporal B. J. Jamieson, 4th Company Australian Machine Gun Corps, Australian Imperial Force

M.M. London Gazette 17 November 1917. The original recommendation states:

‘[Jamieson] Who acted as a runner between Advanced Company Headquarters and the guns in the front system during the attack near Zonnebeke on 26th September 1917.

He was instrumental in maintaining communications and guiding ration parties to the guns. On one occasion in a heavy barrage when the ration party who were all casualties he himself dressed the wounded and rushed away for stretcher bearers.

He has shown great daring during the whole of the operations and is recommended for his bravery and valuable work. He is recommended for the Military Medal.’

Bert James Jamieson was born in Williamstown, Melbourne, Australia, in 1892. He was employed as a journalist prior to enlisting in the Australian Imperial Force, 28 July 1915. Jamieson was originally listed on the strength of the 24th Battalion Reinforcements, prior to transfer to the 8th and the 14th Australian Infantry Battalions. He embarked for Egypt in May 1916, and served in the French theatre of war from June 1916.

Jamieson transferred to the 4th Company Australian Machine Gun Corps in January 1917, and advanced to Lance-Corporal in July of the same year. He was awarded his M.M. for service with the 4th Company Australian Machine Gun Corps, as part of the 4th Australian Division near Zonnebeke, 26 September 1917. He returned to Australia in H.T.
Ypiringa, and was discharged 3 April 1920.
