A Great War 1918 ‘Western Front’ D.C.M. awarded to Regimental Quartermaster Sergeant H. Gentry, Essex Regiment, who was Mentioned in Despatches in 1917, and died at home on 8 November 1918

D.C.M. London Gazette 21 October 1918:
‘For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. He has carried out his duties in a very capable manner, for a long time in the absence of the Quartermaster. He has always seen to the comfort of the Battalion and brought up rations under trying and dangerous circumstances. He has always set a fine example to his men.’

Herbert Gentry was born in South Ockendon, Essex, in 1892 and attested for the Essex Regiment at East Ham. He served during the Great War with the 10th Battalion on the Western Front from 25 July 1915, and in addition to being awarded the D.C.M. was Mentioned in Despatches (London Gazette 21 December 1917). Advanced Regimental Quartermaster Sergeant, he died at home of pneumonia on 8 November 1918, whilst serving at the Regimental Depot, and is buried in Brookwood Military Cemetery, Surrey.
