M.C. London Gazette 26 March 1918; citation 24 August 1918:

‘T./2nd Lt. Cyril Frederick John Keeling, Essex R.
For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. When in command of a raiding party, on discovering that the enemy’s strength was greater than reports had led him to believe, he without hesitation drove them from three successive positions, finally bombing them and routing them in a charge. The result of this gallant display of leadership and initiative was eight prisoners and a machine gun.’

Cyril Frederick John Keeling served with the 5th Lancers in the Egyptian theatre of war from 11 May 1915. He was commissioned into the 3rd Battalion, Essex Regiment on 26 June 1917.
