A Great War 1916 ‘Somme’ M.C. group of three awarded to Captain S. F. Peshall, King’s Royal Rifle Corps

M.C. London Gazette 11 December 1916:

‘For conspicuous gallantry in action. He led a small bombing party against the enemy and drove them back at a critical time. Later, he barricaded the trench and held it against repeated attacks. He was wounded.’

Samuel Frederick Peshall was born in Oldeberrow, Warwickshire, in November 1882. He was educated at Rossall School prior to being commissioned Second Lieutenant in the 18th (Service) Battalion (Arts and Crafts), King’s Royal Rifle Corps. He served with the Battalion in the French theatre of war from 13 June 1916. The Battalion served part of the 122nd Brigade, 41st Division on the Somme, August - October 1916.

Peshall advanced to Acting Captain, and in later life resided at Quorn Grange, Loughborough. He served as a Sheriff of Leicestershire during the Second War.
