Frederick Temple Hamilton-Temple Blackwood, First Marquess of Dufferin and Ava, was created Marquess on 12 November 1888. He unexpectedly resigned the viceroyalty the next month, and unfinished patterns of presentation medals with his new titles are known for both India and Burma. Puddester (884.1.4) gives this piece RRRR, ‘excessively rare, less than a dozen specimens known.’
