Robert Sandilands was born in London in 1893 and attested for the Highland Light Infantry at Glasgow on 24 May 1915. He served during the Great War with the 1st/7th Battalion as part of the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force from 15 October 1915, before transferring to the Machine Gun Corps on 26 July 1916. He served with them in Palestine and on the Western Front, where he was employed on the Hindenburg Line, and was twice wounded, suffering a gun shot wound to the right arm on 11 November 1917, and by a gas shell on 12 October 1918.

Clarence Butterworth was born in Leeds, Yorkshire, in 1889 and attested for the Seaforth Highlanders on 17 November 1915. He served with the 4th Battalion during the Great War on the Western Front from 24 March 1916, and ‘whilst serving at High Wood, near Albert, on 21 July 1916 was blown up by a shell’ (recipient’s application for a disablement pension refers). He transferred to the Labour Corps on 25 May 1918, and was discharged on 14 February 1919, having been awarded a Silver War Badge.
