Herbert Brooke Trevor Sykes was born in Belfast in 1894 and attested for the Royal Engineers in Manchester on 29 August 1914. He served during the Great War on the Western Front from 24 August 1915, and, in his statement of disability wrote: ‘In August 1917 I was wounded in the back above the right hip and gassed.’

Wallace Sidney Mitchell attested for the Royal Garrison Artillery at Newhaven, Sussex, on 9 January 1914 and served during the Great War with No. 43 Siege Battery, Royal Garrison Artillery in the Egyptian theatre of War from 4 August 1915 (also entitled to a 1914-15 Star). Promoted Bombardier on 4 February 1916, and Corporal on 19 June 1918, he transferred to the Military Foot Police on 6 April 1920, and served with the Dublin Detachment in Ireland during the Irish uprising. He was discharged on 21 June 1920, after 6 years and 164 days’ service.
