Boyce Nicholson was born in Hanley, Staffordshire, on 16 September 1886 and attested for the Canadian Overseas Expeditionary Force at Brandon, Manitoba on 1 December 1914, having previously served for 3 years in the Staffordshire Volunteer Artillery. He served during the Great War as a Signaller with the 1st Battalion, Canadian Mounted Rifles, on the Western Front from 22 September 1915, before transferring to the Canadian Army Ordnance Corps on 1 March 1917. He was advanced Staff Sergeant on 24 October 1918, and for his services during the Great War was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal.
