Frederick William Lister was born in Hitcham, Suffolk, in 1891 and attested for the Norfolk Regiment on 8 May 1912. He served with the 2nd Battalion in India from 12 September 1913, and then with the Indian Expeditionary Force during the Great War in Mesopotamia from 6 November 1914. He was wounded in Mesopotamia on 22 November 1915, and returned home, being discharged on account of his wounds on 3 August 1916, after 4 years and 88 days’ service.
