Archibald Telford was born in Edinburgh, and attested for the Seaforth Highlanders at the city of his birth in April 1885. He served with the 2nd Battalion, for seven years, including during the Hazara campaign 1891, before his discharge in 1893. Telford was mobilized from the Reserve to serve with the 2nd Battalion during the Second Boer War in South Africa, and subsequently transferred to the 3rd Battalion in September 1903.
