One officer and 31 other ranks of the 5th Dragoon Guards were present at Abu Klea, where they formed part of the Heavy Camel Regiment. Major Atherton and nine men were killed, seven men were wounded, one of whom died of wounds. Two men were awarded the D.C.M. for Abu Klea.
