Pair: Brigade Surgeon James Paxton, Army Medical Department

James Paxton was born at Stonehaven, Kincardineshire, on 28 January 1836; Assistant Surgeon, Staff, 22 April 1858; 30th Foot, 28 October 1864; Army Medical Department, Surgeon, 1 March 1873; Surgeon Major, 1 April 1873; Lieutenant-Colonel, 22 April 1878; Brigade Surgeon, 28 April 1884; retired 27 June 1888.

Paxton became a medical student at Edinburgh University and, in the midst of his studies volunteered for service with the Royal Navy in the Baltic campaign, serving on board H.M.S.
Pylades as Hospital Dresser, March to October 1855 (Baltic Medal). Returning to Edinburgh University he qualified in 1857 as M.D. and L.R.C.S. At this time he was the author of an article entitled ‘On ovarian dropsy’.

In 1858 he joined the Army as an Assistant Surgeon and by 1864 he was posted with the 30th Foot, based at Montreal, Canada, seeing service during the Fenian uprisings of 1866 (Medal with clasp).
