Pair: Private Henry Matthews, 10th Foot, wounded in the right thigh at Goojerat

Sutlej 1845-46, for Sobraon 1846, no clasp (Hy. Matthews 10th Regt.); Punjab 1848-49, 2 clasps, Mooltan, Goojerat (Henry Matthews, 10th foot.) edge bruising and contact marks, otherwise nearly very fine (2) £800-1000

Henry Matthews was born in the Parish of St Thomas, Salisbury, Wiltshire, and attested for the 53rd Foot on 10 February 1831, aged 19 years 2 months. He transferred to the 10th Foot on 1 April 1842, and ‘served in the campaign of 1845, 46 with the Army of the Sutledge, present at the battle of Sobraon, 10th Feb 1846 and occupation of Lahore. Served in the campaign of 1849, 49 including the whole of the siege operations before Mooltan; action of Soorjkoond 7 Novr; carrying the heights before Mooltan 27th Decr 1848, and surrender of the fortress 22nd Jan 1849. Wounded by a grape shot in the right thigh at Goojerat.’ Henry Matthews was discharged at Ferozepore on 30 September 1849. Sold with copied discharge papers and an original copy of The Illustrated London News Supplement for March 1849 covering the war in the Punjab.
