Pair: Corporal James Byrne, 40th Foot

Candahar Ghuznee Cabul 1842 (Corporal James Byrne H.M. 40th Regt.) fitted with German-silver clip and bar suspension; Maharajpoor Star 1843 (Corpl. James Byrne H.M. 40th Regt.) brass hook adapted to German-silver bar suspension, edge bruising and contact marks, therefore good fine (2) £600-700

James Byrne was born in the Parish of Roscrea, County Tipperary, and enlisted for the 40th Foot at Calow on 15 August 1835, aged 18. He served overseas in the East Indies for 10 years, the remainder at Home, and was discharged at Chatham on 10 October 1856, having been found unfit for service. His Character and Conduct was described as ‘Indifferent; is not in possession of any good conduct badge; has medal for Affghanistan & bronze star for Maharajpoor; he was tried by Regl. Court Martial on 4 May 1845 for drunkenness on parade - again by Regl. Court Martial on 15 May 1846 for drunkenness on parade - again by Regl. Court Martial 26 January 1852 for habitual drunkenness.’ Sold with copied discharge papers.
