Thomas Thornett attested for the 24th Foot in early 1873, and was posted initially to the 2nd Battalion. He transferred to the 1st Battalion in October 1873, and served in ‘H’ Company at St. Helena from 1876-77, and then in South Africa during the Zulu War. He was killed in action at the battle of Isandhlwana on 22 January 1879.
