James Carter, alias James McCarty, was born in Gateshead, Co. Durham, and attested for the Rifle Brigade on 27 January 1859. He served with the Rifle Brigade in Canada, and was discharged with the rank of Sergeant at Dover on 8 February 1873- pay records show that he was in the Rifle Brigade Band as musician and also did duty as Hospital attendant. He subsequently emigrated to Canada and was employed as a Clerk at the Dead Letter Office, Balmy Beach, Toronto, Ontario. He died in Toronto on 15 September 1907.
