Thomas Porteous was born in Dunfermline, Scotland, and attested for the 79th Highlanders at Glasgow in October 1842. He served with the Regiment in the Crimea (entitled to medal with ‘Alma’, ‘Balaklava’ and ‘Sebastopol’ clasps), and during the Indian Mutiny. Porteous was discharged 25 April 1860, having served 16 years and 198 days with the Colours.
