A. Rogers was a native of Walthamstow. He served during the Great War with the 10th (Service) Battalion, Essex Regiment in the French theatre of war from 25 July 1915. Prior to the war he had been employed by a Mr Robben of Scutton Street, Bishopsgate. Rogers’ commanding officer wrote the following testimonial to Robben in January 1919:

‘I am taking this opportunity of testifying to the remarkable war service of No. 14316 Sergeant Rogers. A. of this Battalion who I understand is returning to your employ. I have known Sergeant Rogers since 1914. Then he was a Private in my Platoon, and I have watched his steady development in character and worth, throughout the subsequent years of war.

He has a long and almost unique record of magnificent front line service in the course of which he has repeatedly displayed the utmost gallantry in the face of the enemy.

I consider him a most courageous energetic and reliable N.C.O. and I am convinced that he returns to your employ with a value enormously enhanced by his service in the Army.

In view of this, I trust that you will do your best to further his advancement by any means in your power, as some recognition of his services to his country.’

Having served with the 10th Battalion throughout the Great War, Rogers was discharged in February 1919.
