D.C.M. London Gazette 11 March 1916:

‘For conspicuous gallantry. Although suffering severely himself, he, with great coolness and bravery, carried his platoon Sergeant, under heavy fire, back into safety, thereby saving his life. He was obliged to crawl, and at the same time to stop the “arterial” bleeding. Against the wishes of the medical officer, he returned to the firing line, and did excellent work until he had to be carried off to hospital.’

W. Berry served during the Great War with the 11th (Service) Battalion, Highland Light Infantry on the Western Front. At the time that his D.C.M. was gazetted he was held on the strength of the Depot, H.L.I.
