Walter Thomas Forrest Holland was born at Worcester on 1 June 1893, son of Walter Holland, J.P. He was educated at Eton and received his first commission as a Second Lieutenant, 21st Lancers, on 4 September 1912, becoming Lieutenant on 9 July 1914. Issued with Royal Aero Certificate No. 1408, Beatty School, Hendon, 5 July 1915. He was wounded at Armentieres, France, when flying with No. 100 Squadron, Royal Flying Corps, on 27 July 1917: ‘Later in the evening around 2230 Captain W. T. F. Holland from 100 Squadron R.F.C. was attempting to bomb an enemy aerodrome in his BE2e A1872 when he was hit by anti-aircraft fire. He struggled back home and wrecked the craft on landing wounding himself in the process.’
