Three: Lance-Sergeant H. Connor, Lancashire Fusiliers, killed in action on the First Day of the Battle of the Somme, 1 July 1916

Hugh Connor was born in Irlam, Lancashire, and attested for the Lancashire Fusiliers at Salford, Lancashire. He served with “C” Company, 15th Battalion during the Great War on the Western Front, and was killed in action on the first day of the Battle of the Somme, 1 July 1916, on which date the Battalion took part in 32nd Division’s assault on Thiepvalt, suffering total casualties of 470 out of an attacking force of 624. Connor has no known grave, and is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, France.
