A Sudan pair awarded to Sergeant G. Lelliott, 21st Lancers, who took part in the celebrated Charge at Omdurman, 2 September 1898

George Lelliott was born in 1864 and attested for the 14th (King’s) Hussars c.1885. He transferred to the 21st Hussars at Colchester on 1 October 1887. He served with the Regiment in India from November 1887, and was promoted Lance Corporal in 1888; Corporal in 1890; Lance-Sergeant in 1892; Sergeant Instructor of Musketry in 1894; and Acting Quartermaster Sergeant in 1896. In October 1896 he embarked with the Regiment to Cairo for service in Egypt, and the following year the 21st Hussars were redesignated the 21st Lancers. He served with the 21st Lancers in the Sudan, and is confirmed as having taken part in the famous Charge at Omdurman as part of Captain W. M. Doyne’s “C” Squadron on 2 September 1898.

Lelliott remained in Egypt until November 1899 when the regiment returned to Ireland, where he died on 21 December 1899. He is buried in the Curragh Military Cemetery.
