William Southam was born in Aylesford, Buckinghamshire, in 1836, and attested for the King's Royal Rifle Corps at Westminster on 16 November 1858. He served with the 2nd Battalion in China, 1859-60, and subsequently for 10 years and 10 months in India. He was invalided to England suffering from chronic bronchitis on 27 December 1877, and was discharged on 14 April 1879, after 20 years and 159 days’ service.
