Walter Manning was born in Dalkeith, Edinburgh, in 1879 and attested for the Imperial Yeomanry at London on 8 March 1900. He served with the 72nd (Rough Riders) Company, 20th Battalion Imperial Yeomanry in South Africa during the Boer War from 14 April 1900. He was discharged at Johannesburg on 5 November 1900 upon joining the Imperial Military Railways, after 243 days’ service. He subsequently served with the Canadian Railway Troops during the Great War.
