H. W. Doggett was born in Cambridgeshire in 1881 and attested for the Imperial Yeomanry at the Pall Mall Depot, London, on 4 March 1901. He served with the 40th (Oxfordshire) Company, 10th Battalion Imperial Yeomanry in South Africa during the Boer War from 25 March 1901 to 2 August 1902, and was discharged on 9 August 1902, after 1 year and 159 days’ service.
