Alexander Torrance was born in Kirkintilloch, Dumbartonshire, in 1881 and attested for the Imperial Yeomanry at Glasgow on 28 January 1901. He served with the 18th (Queen’s Own Royal Glasgow and Lower Ward of Lanark) Company, 6th Battalion Imperial Yeomanry in South Africa during the Boer War from 22 February 1901 to 4 August 1902, and was discharged at Aldershot on 11 August 1902, after 1 year and 196 days’ service.
