Lawrence Blackwell attested for the Imperial Yeomanry at Derby on 24 January 1901, and served with the 8th (Derbyshire) Company, 4th Battalion Imperial Yeomanry in South Africa during the Boer War. He was discharged at Shorncliffe on 5 June 1902.
