John Harry Harker attested for the Lincolnshire Regiment and served during the Great War with the 1/5th Battalion on the Western Front from 1 March 1915. Commissioned Lieutenant in the Norfolk Regiment, he returned to the Lincolnshire Regiment, and was promoted Captain. Relinquishing his commission on the cessation of hostilities, he joined the Lincolnshire Constabulary and rose through the ranks to that of Detective Superintendent, before being appointed Assistant Chief Constable in August 1939. Whilst serving in this role he prepared the 1947 Edition of the Force’s Instruction Book, described in the Foreword by the Chief Constable as ‘the most lucid and comprehensive book of instruction that this Force has ever known.’ He retired on 31 July 1948, having been awarded the King’s Police and Fire Service Medal shortly before his retirement.
