Africa General Service 1902-56, 1 clasp, Nyasaland 1915 (Man Singh. Nyasaland Vol: Res:) pawn broker’s marks to edge prior to naming, very fine £80-120

Man Singh arrived in Malawi in c.1910 and served as an Indian Clerk in the Government Civil Service and was an Assessor based in Limbe. He joined the Nyasaland Volunteer Reserve on 1 August 1914, and was awarded the Africa General Service Medal for Garrison duties at the Railways HQ at Limbe. He transferred to Port Herald Section in February 1917, and was subsequently awarded the Colonial Auxiliary Forces Long Service Medal on 10 February 1932. He died in Malawi in 1962.

In search of Her Majesty's Lions of Punjab - the Sikhs in British Central Africa’, Narhari (Tony) Patel writes about one of the Sikhs:
‘we also had Man Singh whom all the kids called Grandpa Singh. He used to carry a monkey on his shoulders and take all the kids (about a dozen) to an Indian shop every Saturday afternoon and buy them soft drinks and sweets.’
