Charles Stillwell was born in Chichester, Sussex, in 1870 and attested there for the Royal Artillery on 30 March 1889, whilst currently serving in the 3rd (Militia) Battalion, Royal Sussex Regiment. He joined the Royal Artillery as a Driver at Colchester on 2 April 1889, and transferred to the Army Reserve seven years later on 30 March 1896. Recalled to service following the outbreak of the Boer War, he served with the 82nd Battery, Royal Field Artillery in South Africa from 27 January 1900 to 12 March 1902. Posted to No. 2 Depot, R.F.A., he returned to the U.K. on 4 April 1902, and was discharged on 21 April of that year, after 13 years and 23 days’ service.
