Queen’s South Africa 1899-1902, 4 clasps, Cape Colony, Johannesburg, Diamond Hill, Wittebergen (3636 Pte. E. Hopper 1: R: Sussex Regt.) contact marks, nearly very fine £80-120

Edward Hopper was born in Hastings, Sussex, in 1872 and attested for the Royal Sussex Regiment at Chichester on 28 January 1891, whilst currently serving in the 3rd (Militia) Battalion, Royal Sussex Regiment. Posted initially to the 1st Battalion, he transferred to the 2nd Battalion on 26 September 1892, and served with them in India from that date until 1 February 1899, taking part during the operations on the Punjab Frontier and at Tirah, 1897-98 (entitled to India General Service Medal 1895-1902 with two clasps). Transferring to the Army Reserve on 15 February 1899, he was recalled to the Colours on 2 January 1900, and served with the 1st Battalion in South Africa during the Boer War from 10 February 1900 until 15 September 1902. He was discharged on 27 January 1903, after 12 years’ service.
