Thomas Young was born in Kidderminster, Worcestershire, in 1880 and attested for the South Staffordshire Regiment on 14 November 1898, whilst currently serving in the 4th (Militia) Battalion, South Stafford Regiment. He served with the 1st Battalion in South Africa during the Boer War from 30 June 1901 to 3 June 1904.
