Egypt and Sudan 1882-89, undated reverse, 1 clasp, El-Teb (W. Sponceby, Pte. R.M.) light pitting, very fine £240-280

William Sponceby was born in Scarborough, Yorkshire, on 11 December 1860 and enlisted in the Royal Marines at Liverpool on 18 August 1881. Posted initially to the Depot, he transferred to No. 32 Company, Portsmouth Division, on 26 June 1882. Posted to H.M.S. Euryalus on 8 February 1884, he served in the Sudan Campaign in 1884, being present at the Battle of El-Teb, 29 February 1884. He was invalided out of the service, suffering from epilepsy, on 8 April 1885, after 3 years and 234 days’ service.

Approximately 86 single clasp ‘El-Teb’ awards to the Royal Navy and Royal Marines.
