South Africa 1877-79, 1 clasp, 1879 (50/799 Pte. W. Walker. 57th Foot) two small edge bruises, otherwise nearly extremely fine £400-500

William Walker enlisted and joined the 50th Brigade Depot at Woolwich on 17 June 1876, aged 19. This Depot was established to serve the needs of both the 57th and 77th Regiments, and Walker was transferred to the 77th Regiment at Cork on 7 September 1876. He next appears to have been one of the large draft sent from Ireland in February 1879 to boost the strength of the 57th Regiment in South Africa for participation in the Zulu War. After a short stay in Durban the 57th embarked for England on 1 November 1879 and six weeks later were back in Ireland, where the draft from the 77th were returned to their own regiment.

Sold with muster roll extracts and medal roll entry.
