John Sargent was born in Colchester, Essex, in 1839, and attested there for the Rifle Brigade on 10 October 1857. After a short period with the Depot in Colchester, he was posted to the 3rd Battalion, then in India as part of the force sent to suppress the Indian Mutiny, and arrived in India in May 1858 (too late to qualify for the Indian Mutiny medal). He served for 12 years and 1 month in India, and took part in the expedition under Brevet Colonel A. F. Macdonell on the North West Frontier of India between 5 December 1863 and 2 January 1864. He returned to England on 1 March 1868, and after four months with the Depot returned to India on 5 November 1868. He saw further service at Dinapoore and Chunar, before returning to England in March 1871 having been found unfit for further service. He was discharged at the Royal Victoria Hospital, Netley, on 19 August 1872.
