Sutlej 1845-46, for Aliwal 1846, 1 clasp, Sobraon (John Saunders 53rd Regt.) good very fine £500-550

John Saunders enlisted into the 48th Foot at Cambridge on 15 December 1842, aged 18. He was posted to the Depot at Guernsey from 26 December 1842 until 30 June 1844, when he transferred as a volunteer to the 53rd Foot. He arrived in India in January 1845 and in the following year took part in the battles of Aliwal and Sobraon, being wounded at the latter action, 10 February 1846. After the campaign the 53rd went into cantonments at Umballah in April 1846, and later that year moved to Ferozepore where John Saunders died, possibly from the effects of his wounds, on 2 October 1847.

Sold with copied medal roll entry and extracts from muster rolls.
