Perkin Francis volunteered for the 24th Foot, from the Durham Militia, on 4 April 1809. He joined the 2nd Battalion in Portugal on 25 May 1809, and participated in all the campaigns between Talavera and the Pyrenees. He was not present at the battles of Nivelle and Orthes because he was hospitalised at Santander. He is shown in the musters as being invalided and based at the regimental York Depot from 24 October 1814 until 24 April 1817, when he was discharged with effect from 31 December 1814.
