Alexander Ross was born in the Parish of Grey Friars, Edinburgh, in 1782, and enlisted into the 25th Foot at Plymouth, Devon, on 8 April 1793, aged 11 years. He served with the 1st Battalion of the Regiment in the West Indies from 2 February 1808 until 27 July 1817, and was present when it formed part of the British force which captured the island of Martinique in February 1809, and also at the capture of the island of Guadaloupe in February 1810. For most of his period of service he was a Drummer until 25 August 1815, when he was promoted from Drummer to Drum-Major, with the rank of Sergeant. He was finally discharged at Dublin on 18 August 1821, in consequence of a reduction in the regiment. His general conduct was described as ‘unexceptionable’.
