Naval General Service 1793-1840, 1 clasp, Syria (Dennis Donoughe.) attempted erasure of ‘H’, otherwise extremely fine £500-600

Dennis Donoughe is confirmed on the roll as Boatswain’s Mate aboard H.M.S. Thunderer at Syria.

Dennis Donoughe was born at Cork, Ireland, and was brought up to the sea as a trade. He first entered the Royal Navy as a volunteer aboard H.M.S. Cyrus on 2 March 1821, rated Ordinary Seaman. He next served as Able Seaman in Sappho, December 1821 to April 1824; Gunners Crew in Thetis, May 1824 to October 1826, and as Boatswain’s Mate, November 1826 to March 1831; Captain’s Coxswain in Stag, April 1831 to October 1832; Quarter-Master in Malabar, October 1832 to July 1834; Pique, November 1834 to November 1835; Talavera, March 1836 to January 1840; Boatswain’s Mate in Thunderer, 1 February to 12 October 1843. The Thunderer was his last ship, being Paid Off on 16 October 1843. Whilst serving in Thunderer he received an Anchor type L.S. & G.C. medal for 21 years service which is known to exist.
