New Zealand 1845-66, reverse dated 1860 to 1861 (Pte. R-M W. R. Hickmott H M S - Iris) a slightly later issue, minor official correction to ship, very fine £300-340

William Richard Hickmott was born in Chatham, Kent, in 1832 and attested for the Royal Marines at Rochester, Kent, on 3 April 1855, having previously served in the West Kent Light Infantry Militia. He served in H.M.S. Iris from 3 January 1857 to 3 August 1861, and subsequently in H.M.S. Formidable, and was promoted Corporal on 2 March 1863. Reverting to Private on 6 August 1864, he was discharged on 6 April 1867 after 12 years and 4 days’ service. He emigrated to the United States of America in 1892, and died in Kansas in 1910.

Medal sent 9 February 1874. Approximately 13 Medals to Royal Marines in H.M.S.
