John Carson enlisted as a Private into the 73rd Foot on 22 February 182, and thereafter received rapid promotion to Corporal, 25 September 1825, and Sergeant, 25 May 1826. He was promoted to Quarter-master-Sergeant on 12 January 1843, and received a commission as Quarter-Master of the 73rd on 28 November 1845. He was placed on half-pay with the rank of Honorary Captain on 24 February 1857. He served in the Kaffir wars of 1846-47 and 1850-53.
