William Dick was a native of Chryston, Glasgow. He served during the Great War with the Royal Highlanders in the French theatre of war from 30 August 1914. He advanced to Lance Corporal, and was serving with the 2nd Battalion when he was killed in action, 25 September 1915. On the latter date the Battalion were engaged in the first day of the Battle of Loos. At the start of the day the Battalion’s strength was 21 officers and 796 other ranks, at the end of the day’s fighting the Battalion had suffered casualties of 363 killed, missing or wounded.
