David Williamson was born in the Parish of Lochee, Dundee, Forfar, and attested at Perth for the Royal Highlanders on 6 March 1897. He served in South Africa from 22 October 1899 to 22 October 1902, and afterwards in India from October 1902 to December 1908, and from December 1911 to September 1914. He served in France from 12 October 1914 and received a gun shot wound on 20 May 1915, when he was invalided home. He returned to France on 27 October 1915, where he remained until 10 April 1919.
