William Bruce was born at Montrose and enlisted at Edinburgh on 17 March 1882, aged 19 years 6 months, a blacksmith by trade. He embarked for Egypt on the S.S. Poonah on 28 November 1883, and served in Egypt and the Sudan from 19 December 1883 to 30 April 1886. He transferred to the Reserve in November 1889 and was discharged on 16 March 1894. Sold with copied discharge papers and other research.
